MINING - Evaporation Ponds

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth, usually from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, reef, or placer deposit. Exploitation of these deposits for raw material is based on the economic viability of investing in the equipment, labor, and energy required to extract, refine and transport the materials found at the mine to manufacturers who can use the material.

Durable geosynthetics are particularly important for these evaporation ponds because they prevent the loss of the final product. Evaporation ponds in the mining industry can also be used to contain and reduce wastewater. As wastewater from mining facilities is often rich in heavy metals and minerals, it cannot be discharged naturally. Impermeable liners are essential for all mining evaporation ponds.

Geomembranes

HDPE geomembranes have high chemical resistance and durability, even be exposed to sunlight and hydrocarbons. Moreover, their black color can enhance the evaporation of water.

They are an extremely cost-effective product in the intense stresses of weather. These features make them an ideal impermeable barrier in mining projects.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs)

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are consisting of a layer of sodium bentonite and are supported by two layers of geotextile. Geotextiles offer long-lasting puncture and tensile strength in harsh conditions.

While the bentonite’s high expansibility and high water absorption capacity provide an effective hydraulic seal. Therefore, GCLs have a long-lasting resistance to physical and chemical break-down.

Geogrids

Geogrids are strong in tension. This fact allows them to prevent the soil from erosion and further stabilize and reinforce soil.

The geogrid is environmentally friendly that which results in a more economical construction.
