WATER - Canals

Brief Introduction

Canals or artificial waterways are waterways or engineered channels built for drainage management or for conveyancing water transport vehicles.
Geosynthetics, human-made products, such as geotextile, geomembrane, and geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), can be extensively used in various sectors, including water treatment. In terms of canals, they help to create more efficient waterways.

HDPE geomembranes

Geomembrane

So far, HDPE geomembrane is the preferred geosynthetic for canal lining. They are very popular for their excellent performance and resistance to chemicals, hydrocarbons, and abrasion.
Geomembranes are available in smooth and textured varieties. By offering greater flexibility than HDPE, LLDPE geomembranes are ideal for differential settlement projects.

Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs)

The benefits of GCL barriers include ease of installation, better hydraulic performance, and resistance to various weather conditions.
GCL barriers prevent high flows or propellers stirring up water in the riverbed from causing sedimentation in the watercourse.

Geotextiles

Nonwoven geotextiles have many key functions for canal systems. They prevent erosion and separate the different soils.
Their robustness, versatility, and durability help to ensure the long-term successful operation of the canal.
