ENERGY - Coal Operation

Brief Introduction

In coal operations, geosynthetic lining systems commonly dispose of waste energy-generating materials, such as coal ash.

Because of the high potential for contamination from aqueous leachate from coal combustion residuals (CCRs), geosynthetic liner systems must be used as a barrier to prevent contamination from the CCRs from seeping from the site into the groundwater. The local environment has been significantly improved.

Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs)

Coal ash is a kind of fine-grained geotechnical material. It behaves differently from ordinary soil due to its particle structure and chemical composition difference.

However, it could be successfully retained by various nonwoven/woven geotextiles. GCL combines geotextiles with sodium bentonite to create a highly impermeable barrier.

Geomembranes

It has a high strength-to-density ratio and can withstand a variety of solvents and high temperatures for short periods.

In addition, it can prevent toxic chemicals from seeping into groundwater.

Geotextile-Geonet Composites (Drainage Geocomposites)

It is a special type of coupled geosynthetic product that combines an HDPE biaxial geonet and a nonwoven geotextile on both sides.

The geocomposites can offer lightweight and easy installation solutions.

Other Use

Geosynthetics are also used in paved and unpaved roads, environmental contamination controls such as erosion control, Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and slopes, etc.

With durability, long-term performance, sustainable solutions, and cost-effective advantages, geosynthetics are superior materials in coal operations.
