The Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil (GRS) Integrated Bridge System (IBS) is a fast, cost-effective bridge support method, which combine the road with the superstructure to form a seamless interface between the bridge and the approach.
GRS: alternative layer of compacted granular fill reinforced with geosynthetic reinforcement materials (such as geotextiles and geogrids).
· It is more flexible than reinforced concrete or piled abutments.
· Reduce the possibility of sudden differential settlement during transition from approach embankment to the bridge abutment.
· Reduced lateral earth pressures on facings which can eliminate the need for a structural facing and allow for non-structural architectural facings to be used.
· The cost is reduced, the construction rate is increased, and the requirements for construction equipment are reduced, compared with the pile supported or ground bearing reinforced concrete abutment.
